Below we will include a FREE downloadable inspection testing compliance checklist that will provide an easy overview for your Perth & WA based business to ensure the current testing you are receiving is compliant to ASNZS 3760 and relevant Western Australian Standards.

There are inspection requirements and simple summary is found within the downloadable content further down this page. Below we will break down point by point the inspection requirements.

Competency Requirements

Testing and tagging can only be completed by a “competent person” as defined in ASNZS 3760 section 1.4.5:

A person is one who the responsible person ensures has the necessary practical and theoretical skills, acquired through training, qualification, experience or a combination of these, to correctly undertake the required tasks.

The competent person completing the testing and tagging also must:

“• Be able to use test equipment safely and effectively.
• Have an understanding of the dangers of electricity, leading to an appreciation of the need for inspection and testing.
• Have an understanding of the construction of Class I and Class II equipment, and of the terms: basic insulation, supplementary insulation, reinforced insulation, double insulation, protective earth, earth continuity, insulation resistance, and earth leakage current.
• Have an understanding of the application and requirements of this standard.
• Have an understanding of the relevant legislative requirements appropriate for the jurisdiction they are operating in.
• Have an understanding of the risks associated with the use of the electrical equipment being inspected and tested, and the risks created by the use of electricity, including the use of guards, barriers, and other parts protecting the user from injury.”

Tag Information Requirements

Once testing is complete, a durable, non-reusable test tag must be attached to the equipment. In Perth and WA, the tag must include:

  • Date of test

  • Next test due date

  • Competent person/company details

  • Asset ID (if used)

Colour coding is commonly used to align with quarterly testing requirements in high-risk industries (construction, mining). You can read more on the testing and tagging colours here

Test and Tag Record keeping

Under WA WHS Regulations, businesses must keep a record of all testing and tagging performed. This includes:

  • Asset register with appliance details

  • Test results (pass/fail, readings)

  • Person responsible for testing

  • Retention of records for the minimum required period (varies by industry)

Records must be easily accessible for inspections, audits, or in the event of an incident.
