Both International and Australian data reveals that over 95% of all workplace fires can be extinguished if the correct extinguisher is used. As a result of this kind of data, there are Australian fire safety standards which all workplaces must adhere to, these standards include:
AS2444 Australian Standard
AS 1851 – 2012 Australian Standard
AS 1670 - Australian Standard
According to the AS 1851, all portable fire extinguishers must be tested every 6 months. There is 3 main types of tests when it comes to portable extinguishers:
Level 1 - A biannual assessment which includes a 21 point check.
level 2 - Annual assessment which includes the initial 21 point check plus an addition 13 point check.
level 4 - A service where the extinguisher undergoes pressure testing and replacement of elements to ensure the extinguisher is still functionable. In most cases, it is not economical to complete a level 4 service and replacement is recommended.
Fire Hose Reels
Fire hose reels are a substitute for extinguishers and are used for their ability to cover more surface area. According to the building code, fire hose reel compartments must be available in areas greater than 500sqm. This is not the only requirement for circumstances that require a hose reel however one of the more common apply requirements. Requirements will vary depending on building codes at time on construction.
In accordance to the AS/NZS 1221 & AS1851, fire hose reels must be tested every 6 months. There is 2 main types of tests for fire hose reels:
Level 1 - A biannual service that includes a visual assessment of external components with a flow and leakage test.
Level 2 - An Annual service that includes all aspects of the biannual service, including an assessment of the hose, hose guide, bearings and anchor points.
Fire Blankets
Fire blankets are used in predominantly in kitchen spaces as they are ideal for class F fires (Fires involving cooking oil and fats).
There is only 1 type of test for a fire blanket which is a level 1 test. This incudes assessment on:
