Single Phase Appliances

Single phase appliance refers to any appliance that takes single phase power. A single phase connection is the flow of electricity through a single conductor. Single phase supplies power at around 240 volts. Every single phase appliance will have 1 active, 1 neutral and depending on the class it may have a earth connection.

There 2 classes of single phase appliances.

Class 1 appliances have all conductive parts & components connected to an earth wire which creates a continuous circuit to the earth pin.

Class 2 appliances are doubled insulated and do not require an earth. These appliances are designed to have no exposed conductive parts with 2 layers of protection to ensure the appliance is electrically safe.

All single phase appliances must be tested in accordance to the ASNZS 3760.

3 Phase Appliances

3 Phase appliances refers to any appliance which takes 3 phase power. a 3 phase connection is constructed with 3 live wires, 1 neutral wire and an earth connection. 3 phase supplies power at 415 volts and is used more for industrial type appliances.

Unlike single phase appliances, 3 phase appliances do not have different classes. each appliance must have all conductive components connected to a earth wire.

All 3 phase appliances must be tested in accordance to the ASNZS 3760.
